personality:From an early age Kathryn was the type of person who made sure that she was not going to be underestimated. Expected from an early age to settle into a normal middle class life and marry young she defied expectation & went against everything that was expected of her to pursue her passion.
Independent, head strong & highly intelligent Kathryn’s only concern has been her work, finding little time to let anything else in or letting herself enjoy anything else. Her constant need to prove others wrong has lead to a fear of not being considered good enough in peoples eyes.
Her obsession with her work has led Kathryn to make rash decisions which at times have nearly cost her life. But her refusal to listen has meant that over time she has become distrusting of people, expecting to be talked about behind her back. Her trust issues have over time cause her to put up emotional walls preventing anyone from being let in
For the very few that get let into Kathryn’s world & behind those walls she becomes fiercely loyal and protective, making sure that their safety was never in question. But it is also these people that can bring out a darker side in Kathryn. When her loved ones are in danger it is said that no-one should stand in her way for fear their own life may be the price for others safety.
Although she has a great respect & love for abnormals, she is somewhat ashamed of how she became one. Not given a choice in the matter at times she sees herself as a victim & needs convincing that what she has been given is a gift. She is genuinely fearful of what she may eventually be able to do or become.
history:Kathryn was born in Sydney in the 1860s in a middle class family. From an early age Kathryn had a love of books in history and spent her early years in libraries dreaming of the possibility of becoming the first female archaeologist to discover something of true significance. Against her parents’ wishes she applied to go to Oxford University in the hopes of furthering her career. Although not allowed to officially enrol Kathryn didn’t care, she wanted to prove to everyone that she was the best student at Oxford eventually winning the respect of her professors & peers.
Kathryn met Helen by accident, she overheard Helen talking about a possible historical connection to an experiment she was working on, only for Kathryn to correct her. This made Helen intrigued by the Australian and led to the two to becoming friends. Helen was Kathryn’s only friend during her time in England because like Helen her work was her first passion.
After 8 years of study at Oxford Kathryn was offered funding by a wealthy businessman to conduct a dig in southern Mongolia but 3 weeks before she was due to leave an accident at home shattered her knee leaving her unable to walk. Kathryn believed her career was over before it had even begun. Through people she knew in London Kathryn heard of a French surgeon performing illegal procedures on people to fix injuries most doctors wouldn’t touch. Desperate she went to Paris hoping the man could help & save her career. What she didn’t know was this man was illegally harvesting body parts to transplant into others (this included abnormals). What Kathryn was given was a full knee replacement taken from a human abnormal hybrid.
Kathryn left feeling surprisingly good but things changed quickly. She began having strange dreams but put them off as side effects of the drugs she had been on. She left for Mongolia but her problems became worse but being the stubborn person she was she fought through it until the 3rd day of the dig when it all went wrong.
Kathryn was digging near the front entrance to a cave with several locals she had hired when she begins to develop a headache which got worse and worse. The pain became so intense that eventually what feels like an explosion happens and Kathryn collapses & begins to fit. The locals run away scared thinking demons had taken hold and in doing so leave Kathryn to die.
It is here that 2 from Hollow Earth find Kathryn & take her back to the city to heal and its here she learns about Abnormals & that part of one was now inside her & the headaches were the abnormal part of her taking hold. She decided to stay in Hollow Earth & studied the extensive history in its libraries and became a powerful member of society.
With Hollow Earth’s destruction Kathryn is forced to return to the surface where she learns Helen is still alive & decides to seek her out for help in living in the modern world & to help her fight the invasion. At this point even Kathryn doesn’t know how abnormal she has become or what she could
