The egg began to crack.
Inside, the creature flailed, using its tail to open the tough shell, absorbing the nutrients through its orange skin. It was tiring work.
Over time, the tail managed to turn the crack into a small hole. The baby inside squirmed to get into a position where it could see. Even though it was pitch black, the creature could still see. It couldn’t recognize anything though.
Eventually, the hole became large enough that the baby could poke its little fingers through. Tearing off the shell, it began to chew on it hungrily. It took several hours, but in time the entity was free.
The baby stretched its limbs. Its tail was too short for it to suck on, so it suckled on its feet instead, gurgling busily.
In all of its previous memories, the being had been tended to immediately. It never had to cry out for attention. It didn’t know how. Instead, the baby just took deep breaths (breathing in air and breathing out oxygen,) never making a sound apart from a soft gurgle, waiting to see what would happen next.
