Helen shifted in her seat, and taking her eyes briefly off Nikola, as she folded her hands neatly in her lap. She hated being scrutinized light this, especially by those she knows all too well. This was the case, only because those like Nikola knew her weaknesses. They knew what made her tick, and what made her angry. They knew what would spark her interest, and they knew what would make her turn her dead in distaste. But Nikola was one of the few people in her life that knew her more than anyone. In a sense she was thankful for this, only because she didn’t have to explain herself. But there were times when she just wanted to be left to make her own decisions.
Helen snapped back to look at Nikola, ”This is why I have entrusted Will to act on my behalf, if in the unlikely scenario that I will be unable to do my job. You should know this, Nikola. He has proved this in the past.”
Ignoring the flirty hint by Nikola, Helen resumed to muse about John. She went to open her mouth to say something, but simply stuttered on her words. Honestly. She just didn’t know what to think. ”I – I honestly don’t know what to think. John has both been a menace and a powerful ally. At this point, neither of us know what his intentions are. Yes, he can be selfish - I am aware of that. But he is not an easy man to dispose of.”

Nikola knew he was toeing a dangerous line, knew she hated it when he studied her, read her. But he was not one to be so easily deterred. His concern for her made him even more persistent than usual. He may on occasion question her, but he rarely stood in the way of whatever poor decision she chose to make. This time, though, he was not certain her judgment could be trusted. Explaining why his next statement lacked his usual sharpness. “You need to rest.”
He was also not convinced of Will’s ability to take over in the event Helen could no longer act as head of the Network. The young man showed potential, he would not deny that. Not to himself, anyway. But he was still inexperienced, something he did not believe they could afford right now. “He isn’t you, Helen. You don’t actually believe he can do your job without you? For a significant stretch of time?” He took another sip of his wine. “That’s a tremendous weight you’re putting on his shoulders, Helen. Think about that.”
“Mostly a menace.” He drowned the dry remark in another mouthful of wine, studying her again, the slight softening of his features giving away his concern. “Be careful, Helen.”
